The homeowner pays the design-build remodel contractor for this process which we call the Feasibility, Planning, & Design Phase.

Comparing Design-Build to other options

Benefits of the Design-Build remodel process
The biggest difference between you going through contractor nightmares or having a good experience, depends on if you choose a design-build remodeling company versus a general contractor.
Luckily there are plenty of design-build remodeling companies in Phoenix to choose from.
To see how it benefits you, click an item below:
It is extremely risky being locked into a construction agreement with a regular remodel contractor without knowing what design items you will go with, how much those design items cost, how much the total remodel will cost, how the remodel will look, and not having it all planned out.
We plan out everything in advance which allows us you to know what items will be used, what it will look like, how much it will cost, and then you decide if you want to sign the construction agreement.
A basic general contractor spending 1 hour at your home and then giving you a correct price in unrealistic and irresponsible on their part.
The Feasibility, Planning, & Design phase ensures everything is planned and helps with having a more controlled budget before getting to the construction phase.
As a design-build firm, you work with an integrated team of design and production staff who all adhere to our renown customer service standards.
Specific design & construction details are being developed throughout the entire process and the focus stays on owner “value”.
The communication benefits of working with a design professional and a construction expert at the same time ensures that potential problems are discovered before the project starts.
This creates transparency a general contractor cannot provide.
The homeowner saves money by eliminating redesign fees and receiving valuable cost-saving advice during the design, planning, and construction process.
Potential cost savings due to a more practical approach to design since the design-build company is more likely to design with an eye toward construction costs versus a general contractor.
Design-build remodel companies get your project done faster since almost everything is planned out in advanced.
One of the reasons is the planning and design phase handles all those decisions that would normally happen after the regular contractor already demoed your space. So by planning the majority of the remodeling in advance there are fewer changes that can cause project delays.
That means we are in your house for less time - weeks sometimes even months compared to some general contractors.
At the end of the feasibility, planning, and design phase, we produce a detailed written description of all work to be performed during your project, presented to you in the form of a proposal with a lump sum price.
Attention to every detail during the estimating process ensures that we will deliver your project without numerous “surprises” and unwanted additional change work orders.
The design build method helps to remove ambiguity that may arise in material and construction specifications. Since the designer and contractor are from the same firm, the focus remains on protecting the homeowner's interest.
A design build company manages a project from beginning to end; from the initial planning stages to post-construction cleanup.
Because of this, design-build contractors are able to work more efficiently, and the opportunity for things to be lost in translation is greatly reduced.
There are far fewer “places to hide” during the construction process because everyone is on the same page.
The smoother workflow and closer connection creates a more positive and supportive working environment.
Single point of responsibility, so there is no finger pointing.
The design-build process eliminates the need for the homeowner to act as a referee between the general contractor and the designer/architect/subcontractors. If something is wrong or missing, there is a team approach already in place ready to resolve the challenge.
This makes a significant difference in the team's ability to work together seamlessly with better understanding of what the homeowner wants to achieve.
Most importantly, you only need to contact one person to understand what's going on at any given moment with your house, rather than calling back and forth between 3 to 8 different companies to find out who has the "ball" right now.
We have all heard the stories of construction getting out of hand and messy. However, design and construction should not be so stressful or chaotic.
The design-build contractor acts as a trusted advisor to homeowners throughout the construction process, guiding the way to the best possible outcome.
Homeowners can't be expected to understand all the intricacies and challenges with construction and the remodel process.
The Design Build model is setup to walk the homeowner through all steps and the backbone of the process is the planning phase. This is a big difference in Design Build VS General Contractor.
With design-build, singular responsibility drives quality and performance in every stage of the process.
During the design phase, we are highly motivated to generate designs that are accurate & error-free.
This motivation continues throughout the construction process, since we alone are accountable for the quality of the final product.
Having a project coordinator saves you time from managing contractors, subcontractors, designers, architects, structural engineers, inspectors, etc.
If you go that route you have to collect all of their initial paperwork like general liability insurance, license, bond, workers comp, and all the other things you need to evaluate them properly. Then you to get bids and evaluate which ones will do a good job. After that, you have to watch over them to ensure they are completing the construction properly.
Design-Build takes all of that is off of the homeowner so they don't have to be chasing people all day long for several weeks if not months.
The design-build firm and the homeowner work together as a team to create a relationship that would be impossible with each working in isolation.
All of the planning, design, demo, construction, clean up, project management, and other items are “under one roof”.
Construction is stressful no matter how good a contractor's process may be.
If a contractor doesn't have a process or a mediocre one, the homeowner will greatly suffer.
If a homeowner works with a Design-Build remodeling company, they know that this company wouldn't be this business model without a process in place. It may not be a perfect process depending on the company, but it ensures they have some processes setup versus some general contractors.
The Design-Build model ensures there is a process in place from the first initial discovery call, until after the project is completed.
This provides a smoother process that homeowners love being a part of.
the Remodel Process steps
We simplify an otherwise complicated process. Just follow our process and we’ll take care of you:
Step 1: Discovery call
The first step is to schedule your discovery call with our Consultation Manager Justin.
He will answer your questions, learn about your project, provide advice, and give you a price range for the remodeling. If it's a good fit, we schedule the in-home evaluation...
Step 2: In-Home Evaluation
At the in-home appointment, we discuss your remodel needs, take measurements, and then leave. Nothing to sign, and no pressure!
Then we submit your detailed scope of work to our in-house estimator, who uses our cost catalog to build it all out in our pricing software to ensure you get real numbers. Then we provide you with a written proposal.
Step 3: Feasibility, Planning, & Design Agreement
If you would like to work together in planning and designing your remodeling project(s), the next step is to sign the design agreement.
Your consultant sends you an e-sign copy to make it easy. We then provide you more information on expectations and what is next.
Step 4: Planning & Design Phase
Our designer helps you choose all of your design selection items and provides 3D renderings to ensure it all looks the way you want.
Our fulfillment team visits your home after the design phase is done to review everything and get the final pricing.
Step 5: Construction Agreement
If we are a good fit for one another, the next step is signing the construction agreement.
We collect the first construction payment which is 30% of the total remodeling cost so we can order materials ASAP.
Step 6: Order Materials and Wait
We order your design selection items, and any materials that could take time to arrive.
You do not want a contractor starting a construction job in your home until they have received all of the important items.
We do NOT have backlogs!
We can start construction 1-2 weeks after all important materials have arrived thanks to our unique design-build model!
Step 7: Pre-Demo & Demo
We prepare for the demo phase by protecting any areas that are not going to be under construction in order to keep the dust, and debris to a minimum.
We start demo while respecting your home and only have the dump trailer at your home for a day or two so it doesn't get in the way.
Step 8: Construction
Everyone knows the construction phase is stressful.
We utilizes great employees, constant communication, professionalism, and an organized process to ensure the best experience possible.
The end result is always worth it and one of the reasons homeowners choose us.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Does The Phoenix Home Remodeling Process Work?
The Phoenix Home Remodeling process starts with planning before construction begins. All projects begin with a Feasibility, Planning, and Design phase so the scope, selections, layout, and investment are defined before the build. This planning-first design-build approach follows the idea of Design first. Build second. One team guides the remodel from concept to completion, which means there is no handoff between designer and contractor. Homeowners can expect organized steps, documented selections, 3D renderings when appropriate, and a final price provided only after design and selections are complete.
Why Does Phoenix Home Remodeling Start With Design Before Construction?
Phoenix Home Remodeling starts with design before construction so the final scope and price are locked in before work begins. The planning and design phase is typically ~6-10 weeks, depending on the project size, selection complexity, and decision pace. During this phase, the team develops the design, reviews feasibility, helps with selections, and creates a defined scope. This reduces uncertainty and supports fixed pricing because the major decisions are made before construction starts, not after walls are opened or materials are already being ordered.
What Happens During The Feasibility Planning And Design Phase?
The Feasibility, Planning, and Design phase defines what will be built, what will be selected, and what the project will cost. Phoenix Home Remodeling uses this phase to understand goals, review the existing space, create design direction, refine layouts, and help homeowners make selections before construction begins. For many projects, 3D renderings are provided before construction begins so you see your space before a single wall is touched. This phase also gives the production team the details needed to prepare for a more organized construction experience.
When Do Homeowners Receive The Final Remodel Price?
Homeowners receive the final remodel price after design and selections are complete. Phoenix Home Remodeling uses planned pricing, which means the final price is based on a defined scope rather than early assumptions. The process is designed to eliminate bait-and-switch and post-deposit price escalation by making decisions before construction starts. While changes can still happen if a homeowner requests a scope adjustment, PHR has a 2.1% change order rate, reflecting the value of planning thoroughly before the build phase begins.
How Long Does The Planning And Design Phase Usually Take?
The planning and design phase usually takes ~6-10 weeks. The exact duration depends on the remodel type, how many rooms are involved, the level of design detail, and how quickly selections are finalized. This time is used to make decisions before construction, including layout, finishes, fixtures, cabinetry, tile, and project scope. Phoenix Home Remodeling uses this phase to prepare the construction team, create a more accurate production plan, and help homeowners feel confident about what will happen before construction begins.
How Long Does Construction Take After Design Is Complete?
Construction time depends on the project type and final scope. Phoenix Home Remodeling provides exact timeline expectations after the design and selections are defined, but typical ranges are whole-home 1.5-3 months, kitchen 4-7 weeks, primary bath 5-7 weeks, guest bath 3-5 weeks, and shower 1-3 weeks. These construction ranges come after the ~6-10 week planning and design phase. A dedicated project manager helps coordinate the schedule, communicate updates, and keep the remodel organized from start to finish.
What Types Of Remodels Fit This Process?
This process fits interior remodeling projects that benefit from design, selection planning, and a defined scope before construction. Phoenix Home Remodeling commonly applies this approach to kitchens, bathrooms, showers, laundry rooms, entertainment walls, living spaces, and whole-home remodels. The company is a planning-first design-build remodeler, so the process is strongest for homeowners who want one team handling design and construction together. PHR’s project minimum is $15,000, which helps ensure each project receives the planning, project management, and production support needed for a premium remodeling experience.
How Much Does A Remodel Cost With Phoenix Home Remodeling?
A remodel with Phoenix Home Remodeling depends on the room type, scope, selections, and design complexity. Typical investment ranges are whole-home $150K-$300K, kitchen $50K-$100K, primary bath $40K-$75K, guest bath $18K-$25K, and shower $15K-$40K. These ranges are planning references, not final prices. Final price is provided only after design and selections are complete, which allows the team to price the actual scope instead of relying on early guesses. Homeowners can also review financing information at phxhomeremodeling.com/financing/.
How Does The Design-Build Model Help Homeowners?
The design-build model helps homeowners by keeping design and construction under one coordinated team. Phoenix Home Remodeling uses one team from concept to completion, so the people shaping the design are connected to the people planning and building the project. This reduces miscommunication, supports a defined scope, and helps the project move from planning into construction with fewer unknowns. The result is a more organized remodeling journey where selections, drawings, budget, schedule, and construction details are aligned before the build begins.
Will I See The Remodel Design Before Construction Starts?
You will see the remodel design before construction starts when the project calls for visual planning. Phoenix Home Remodeling provides 3D renderings before construction begins so you can understand the layout, finishes, and overall direction before work starts in your home. This is especially helpful for kitchens, primary bathrooms, entertainment walls, and larger interior remodels where layout and finish decisions need to work together. The renderings also help the team confirm details with you during the planning phase, before final pricing and production preparation.
Who Manages Communication During The Remodel?
A dedicated project manager manages communication during the remodel. Phoenix Home Remodeling assigns a project manager to help coordinate the production schedule, answer questions, share updates, and keep the work aligned with the approved scope. Homeowners also use a homeowner portal, which centralizes key project information and communication in one place. This structure supports a more organized experience because homeowners are not left wondering who to contact or where to find updates during the construction phase.
What Is The Homeowner Portal Used For?
The homeowner portal is used to keep project communication and information organized. Phoenix Home Remodeling uses the portal so homeowners can follow important updates, review project details, and stay connected with the team during the remodel. It supports the overall process by giving homeowners a central place for communication rather than relying only on scattered messages. The portal works alongside the dedicated project manager, who remains the main point of contact for schedule updates, coordination, and questions during the construction phase.
Does Phoenix Home Remodeling Offer A Warranty?
Phoenix Home Remodeling offers a 2-year warranty on completed remodeling work. The warranty is part of the company’s process-focused approach, which includes planning before construction, defined scope, documented selections, and project management during the build. PHR is ROC 313636 and has earned 200+ reviews, giving homeowners added context when evaluating the company’s experience. Homeowners can also view completed work at phxhomeremodeling.com/before-and-after-home-remodeling-pictures/ to see examples of finished interior remodels.
How Are Changes Handled After The Remodel Scope Is Approved?
Changes after the remodel scope is approved are handled as documented scope adjustments. Phoenix Home Remodeling works to reduce changes by completing design, selections, and pricing before construction begins. If a homeowner chooses to adjust the approved scope, the team reviews the impact before moving forward. PHR’s 2.1% change order rate reflects the benefit of the planning-first process. The goal is to make decisions during the ~6-10 week planning and design phase so construction can follow the defined scope as closely as possible.
How Do I Start The Remodel Process?
You start the remodel process by scheduling a consultation with Phoenix Home Remodeling. The first step is to discuss the space, goals, scope, investment range, and whether the project is a fit for the planning-first design-build process. From there, qualified projects move into the Feasibility, Planning, and Design phase before construction is scheduled. You can begin at phxhomeremodeling.com/schedule-consultation/ and review client experiences at phxhomeremodeling.com/remodel-clients/.
